Posing Guide: Elevate Your Portrait Game with these 5 Essential Pro Posing Techniques.
Posing is an essential element of portrait photography because it can help bring your best features and produce a dynamic and engaging image. Here are some easy posing tips to help you take great portrait photos every time:
Let’s start with the basics. A good starting point is to stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, with your weight unevenly distributed on one hip. This will help create a stable, confident, and flattering base pose. Next, turn your body slightly towards the camera, and angle your face towards the light. You will want to “follow the light” for most portrait sessions unless you are experimenting, which is always fun too!
Your body language can be a powerful tool in portrait photography, so use your body language to convey a feeling. Try leaning in slightly to create a sense of intimacy and vulnerability. Or, stand tall above the camera lens to convey confidence and strength. Try experimenting in front of a mirror with different body angles to see how they affect your mood.
Fingers, hands, and arm placement can be tricky to pose if not done correctly. A good place to start is to slightly bend your arms at the elbow and rest your hands on your hips. Still unsure? Props can save the day. Avoid the “high five” hands; it’s okay to shake them out of you need to reset them.
Did I mention props? The right props and accessories can add an interesting element to an image, while giving you something to interact with. Just be sure to incorporate the right props - remember, images tell a story. Consider using items that have meaning or that compliment the color pallet, theme, or mood of your session.
Try different expressions: Facial expressions are the “special sauce” of portrait photography, as they can convey a wide range of emotions. So try on different expressions and see which ones feel the most natural and authentic. “Remember a time when…” and hold that feeling in your face and eyes. Don't be afraid to experiment with more dramatic or playful expressions.
By following these easy posing tips, you'll be well on your way to taking great portraits. A good photographer will be patient and take their time, as it may take a few tries to find the perfect pose. And that’s okay. Most of all, remember to have fun and enjoy the process of collaborating to create something special!
